PRIVILEGE
Child’s Passport
1988 – As a child, I was living in Switzerland and had to apply for a new child’s passport at age 10. At the embassy, there was a long queue of foreigners who needed a transit visa in order to pass through Germany.
Since I was German, I was instantly ushered past all these waiting people and was treated very favourably. There I noticed how important nationality was, how crucial it was to be born in the „right country.“
I was deeply shocked and terribly ashamed.
